Chioma Egodi Files N500 Million Suit Against Erisco Company, IGP Over Illegal Detention

A Nigerian woman, Mrs Chioma Edoka Okoli, who was arrested and detained for three days after she reviewed a tomato product on Facebook has instituted a fundamental rights enforcement suit against the tomato manufacturing company, Erisco Foods Limited, over the violation of her rights to dignity of human person. Joined in the suit No. FHC/L/CS/2164/2023, according to the Originating Motion on Notice are President/CEO of Erisco, Chief Eric Umeofia, Acting Inspector General Police, Kayode Egbetokun. Other Respondents in the lawsuit are, the head of the IGP Monitoring Unit, DCP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, and two investigating police officers, CSP Oliver Odimega and DSP Joel Nimfa. In the suit filed at Federal High Court, Lagos Judicial Division on Wednesday, through a Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, Chioma also sought for N500million damages.  Supreme Court dismisses Atiku’s appeal challenging Tribunal judgement.  On Thursday, Oct. 26, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal filed by the People’s Democratic Party presidential  candidate, Atiku Abubakar, challenging the Sept. 6 judgement of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal.  The apex court also upheld the rulling by the Appeal Court that a candidate does not need to get at least 25 percent of votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to be declared as the country's president. Supreme Court dismisses Atiku’s fresh evidence, says it’s friendly joke

The Supreme Court has dismissed the application by Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to admit fresh evidence in his appeal against President Bola Tinubu for lack of jurisdiction. The apex court described Atiku’s petition as a friendly joke, insisting that it could not be granted. According to the apex court, the case was filed out of time and couldn’t prove cause of forgery. DAILY POST reported that Atiku had sought the leave of the apex court to present fresh evidence of forgery against Tinubu. He pleaded with the court to look into the matter because of its constitutional and democratic implications. The fresh evidence Atiku sought to tender was the academic records of Tinubu, which were handed over to him by the Chicago State University (CSU) on October 2. The former Vice President had informed the court that the fresh evidence was crucial to his appeal, adding that it has inherent jurisdiction to entertain and decide on the application

 Founder of the Omega Power Ministry (OPM), Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere, has suspended all overseas scholarships sponsored by his organization following the depreciation of Naira to a new low of N1,170 per dollar in the parallel market.  The Nigerian currency depreciated by N105 or 9.8 percent compared to the N1065 in the last few days.   Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw has commended the Lagos judge and various organizations that advocated for a fair verdict in the case of Dr. Femi Olaleye. Before his life imprisonment sentence on Tuesday, October 24, Olaleye was arraigned by the Lagos State government on November 22, 2022, on a two-count charge for defiling a child and sexual assault by penetration.   The Presidential Committee on Tax Reforms and Fiscal Policy has announced that it has recommended streamlining of taxes in the country to single-digit.  The committee’s Chairman, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele who briefed newsmen after submitting the report titled ‘Quick Win Report’ to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday, October 24, said they needed to prune the total number of Nigeria’s over 260 official and unofficial taxes to reduce the pains that businesses and individual payers are subjected to.    Oyedele noted that out of the 260 taxes paid by businesses and individuals, only 60 are official. The committee chairman who was in company with the Acting Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service(FIRS), Zacch Adedeji, added that the committee was working to ensure that the 60 were reduced to a single digit.

  Court sacks Redeemed Pastor Ghandi as Soun of Ogbomoso and orders fresh selection process. The Oyo State High Court sitting in Ogbomoso on Wednesday, Oct. 25, upturned the appointment of the new Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye.  Recall that the Oyo State Government announced Redeemend Pastor Ghandi Olaoye as the new Soun and made him king on 8th September 2023.  Before this time, one of the contestants, Kabir Laoye had sued Ghandi Olaoye, noting that he was not eligible to take Soun’s position.  The court ordered that the Oyo State government must not appoint anyone to the position, until after its judgement.

  Pastor Isaac Oyedepo, the second son of the founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, aka Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, has resigned from his position as national youth pastor of the Youth Alive Fellowship (YAF), the youth arm of the church.  This was disclosed by Church Gist, a platform owned by Pastor Leke Beecroft, one of the pastoral assistants at the church’s headquarters in Ota.  Just last month, September 2023, Isaac was announced as the national youth pastor of YAF, taking over from Pastor David Nwabueze who was transferred to Nasarawa State.  Isaac is said to be planning to begin a new ministry independent of the Living Faith Church.  He was ordained as a Living Faith Church pastor by American preacher Kenneth Copeland in May 2007.  In a recent interview, he said his purpose in life was “to reclaim a generation and to ensure that this generation sees the fire God’s revival in our generation.”  Isaac pastored the Winners Chapel International in South Africa; Maryland,
