Declare OUK'S Seat Vacant:Protesters Tell Senate President

It was a show of distress as protesters stormed the complex of the National Assembly calling on the Senate president Ahmad Lawan to declare vacant the seat of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.

The protesters, who came to the assembly complex on Tuesday, June 2, under the aegis of Concerned Citizens of Abia North, staged the show of displeasure against the former state governor.

They argued that Abia North senatorial district feels neglected "angry, less optimistic about their future because they have no representation in the Senate."

According to Vanguard, the protesters wanted Lawan to declare embattled Senator Kalu's seat vacant so that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) can conduct another election for the district.

Orji Uzor Kalu: Protesters storm NASS, urge Lawan to declare senator’s seat vacant
The group argued that since the former governor's trial and conviction, Abia North has been bereft of political voice.
"The conviction and incarceration of the senator representing Abia North, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu leading to his long absence from the National Assembly has effectively silenced our voices.

"Abia North constituents have no representation in the Nation’s highest deliberative body and cannot participate in matters that affect them," the protesters read from a prepared letter.

The protesters further stressed that since Senator Orji's trial, people of the five local governments areas constituting the Abia north have been voiceless in Senate and the politics of Nigeria.

They also lamented that senatorial district is grossly prone to ecological disasters, especially erosion and landslide, urging the president of the Senate to accept their demand with open arms.

Supreme Court nullified the court judgment that sentenced the former governor to 12 years imprisonment over alleged corruption.

Reacting to the judgment on Tuesday, May 12, Falana argued that acts of both supreme and appeal courts allowed judges to exercise powers of the trial courts.
